Here is a cool Glog that gives you more information about Wonder. After exploring the Glog, watch the video below to hear a book talk about Wonder.

In Wonder we just read how Auggie's dog, Darth Daisy, was "put down". People "put down" pets because they are sick and to save them from suffering. As we were reading we started a discussion about whether that is right or wrong. What do you think, is it right or wrong to "put down" a pet? Do you think the Pullmans made the right decision? We are almost finished with Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. What will happen to Matilda? Is her mom really alive? What will she do with tiny Nell? This video gives us a virtual tour of Philadelphia at the time of the Yellow Fever outbreak. This is a great source to help us visualize what life could have been like for the citizens of Philadelphia. Can you use this tour to help you predict the ending to our story? What was the most interesting stop on the tour of Philadelphia to you and why? Comment and respond to a peer's comment by Tuesday. So far this year during our read alouds we have read lots of different genres. We read fantasy (The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles) , science fiction (Among the Hidden), realistic fiction (Wonder). This week we started a historical fiction book, Fever 1793. The first three chapters were full of action and plot twists already! From our reading so far we know the book takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1793. We took notes on some characters introduced, and will add more of their characteristics and traits as we find out more. We will use our inferring skills to help us draw conclusions about each character. We will also make a timeline of events in the book and match them to the historical records to compare and contrast as we go. 5A students--Post an answer in the comments section.
What do you predict will happen to Matilda and how can you support your prediction with evidence from the book? In Wonder Augge's teacher shares a monthly precept with the class. Webster's dictionary defines a precept as, " A command or principle intended as a general rule of action. Students in 5A are writing their own precepts." A precept I follow is... What is a precept you follow in your daily life? Please share them in the comments.
We started the year reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio. It is great read for many reasons, but my favorite being the theme of the book, choose kind. Our class has been enthralled with the story and we have really enjoyed hearing from all the different narrators throughout the book. This book also ties in nicely with our Giant theme of the month, kindness. We will continue to discuss and do activities connected to our reading skills and strategies, as well as character development.
Amazon's summary: August Pullman was born with a facial deformity that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. "Wonder is the best kids' book of the year," said Emily Bazelon, senior editor at Slate.com and author of Sticks and Stones: Defeating the Culture of Bullying and Rediscovering the Power of Character and Empathy. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope. R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness” —indeed, every reader will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. Now here's my challenge to you: How are you going to choose kind today?
